This visualization shows a hierarchical dataset as a radial partition layout, or sunburst diagram, where each arc segment represents a node’s proportional value. Using D3 v5, the code constructs the layout with `d3.hierarchy`, `d3.partition`, and `d3.arc`, rendering SVG paths. The data is embedded directly in `index.js` rather than read from `data.csv`, with arcs styled via the `styles.css` file.

Partition layout

This example demonstrates a partition layout using D3.js, displaying hierarchical data as nested rectangles that encode data values through their areas. The visualization uses a static hierarchical dataset with named nodes (A1, B1, C1, etc.) and numeric sizes. The code creates the layout with `d3.partition()`, sizes it to 400×200 pixels, and applies hierarchy through `d3.hierarchy` with a `sum` accessor. Rectangles are rendered as SVG elements with opacity and white strokes, and their positions and dimensions are computed from the layout’s `x0`, `y0`, `x1`, and `y1` values.

Sunburst Partition

This sunburst visualization uses a radial partition layout to display hierarchical data from a custom `flare.json` dataset, with the root node at the center and leaves on the circumference. The interface offers two modes—Count and Size—that recompute arc angles based on either a uniform value or the `size` property, animating transitions between them via `transition.attrTween` and a custom `arcTween` interpolation. Built with d3.v3, the code employs `d3.layout.partition`, `d3.svg.arc`, and a `d3.scale.category20c` color scale, with SVG paths styled by parent node names.

D3 Partition Layouts

This example demonstrates a hierarchical partition layout, representing the tree data with nested rectangles that are sized according to the sum of their descendant values. The visualization uses the `d3.partition` layout on a `d3.hierarchy` computed from a static JavaScript object, drawing the resulting rectangles and text labels as SVG elements. The code relies on D3 v3’s `d3.select` and the `.join` operator to efficiently update the SVG canvas, with the root node’s sum calculated via `rootNode.sum`.

D3 v5 Zoomable Sunburst

This zoomable sunburst visualization displays hierarchical data from a JSON file using a radial partition layout. Clicking any arc smoothly zooms into that subtree, while clicking the center circle returns to the root. The visualization uses D3 v5’s `d3.hierarchy`, `d3.partition`, and `d3.arc` APIs, with color mapping via `d3.scaleOrdinal` and animation through `transition.attrTween`. SVG rendering with interactive transitions highlights the relationships between nested data categories.

Sunburst Partition

A sunburst diagram displays the hierarchical structure of the Flare visualization library as a set of concentric, radial arcs. The center represents the root, with each ring deeper in the hierarchy and each arc’s angle reflecting a node’s value. Interactive radio buttons switch the partition’s metric between node count and node size. Built with D3.js v3, the visualization uses `d3.layout.partition` to compute the layout and `d3.svg.arc` for path geometry. Animated transitions between metrics are achieved with `transition().attrTween()`, which interpolates arc positions in data space. Data comes from the `flare.json` file.

Bilevel Partition

A zoomable sunburst visualizes hierarchical data from the Flare visualization library. The root node sits at the center, with nested arcs extending outward; each arc’s angle encodes its value, and color indicates the parent category. Clicking an arc zooms in on that subtree, while clicking the center circle returns to the previous level. The example uses d3.layout.partition, d3.svg.arc, and d3.transition with arcTween to animate path changes, rendering with SVG.

Sunburst Partition

A sunburst diagram displays the hierarchical structure of the Flare dataset, with the root at the center and leaves on the circumference. The visualization uses a radial layout where the angle of each arc encodes the value of the corresponding node. The code employs `d3.layout.partition` and `d3.svg.arc` to compute and draw the arcs, with color assigned by the `category20c` scale. A radio button toggles between sizing arcs by node size or by leaf count, triggering a smooth animated transition via `attrTween` and `d3.interpolate`.

D3 v5 Zoomable Sunburst

This zoomable sunburst chart visualizes the hierarchical flare dataset, encoding each node’s value as the arc’s angular width. Clicking a slice zooms into that subtree, dynamically rescaling the partition layout and re-centering the view. Built with D3 v5 and SVG, the example uses `d3.partition`, `d3.hierarchy`, and `d3.interpolate` to animate transitions, reading hierarchical data from a CSV file with id and value fields. The rendered output includes a breadcrumb trail showing the current path.
