The SVG rendering uses D3 v3's `d3.nest` to group works by rating category, arranging them in grid-like clusters, while `d3.scaleLinear` maps hit counts to dot opacity. Drop shadows are applied via SVG filters with `feGaussianBlur` and `feFlood`, and the React-free code loads data asynchronously with `d3.csv`.
