Pantheon - Tracking Cultural Output Through The Ages
This visualization combines a world map with a time-series histogram to explore cultural output through the ages. Using d3.geoNaturalEarth1 and d3.geoPath, it plots notable figures as circles on a natural Earth projection, with circle size reflecting each person's Historical Popularity Index. A d3.brushX interactive date histogram below filters the map by birthdate range. The visualization uses React and d3.v5 to render SVG elements, drawing from a CSV dataset of women with confirmed birthdates sourced from Pantheon.
AI-generated descriptionI plugged the Pantheon dataset into this dataviz template by Curran. There are 62875 people in this dataset. Entries that did not have a birth date were filtered from the original dataset.
The dataset inherits many of the biases and limitations from the user-generated content it originates from. In this case, culturally memorable people are ascertained to be those with biographies in more than 15 languages in Wikipedia.
The interactive date histogram filters cultural, and civilisational output through the ages.
This is a work in progress! Apologies if it kills your browser.
Update: I've filtered the dataset to Mathematicians to reduce load while I get it working.
