A bar chart displays the ten most populous countries using UN population data for 2019. The D3 v7 scales, `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear`, map country names and population values to SVG rectangles. React state manages the asynchronous loading of the CSV via D3's `csv` function. The chart applies the margin convention by translating a group element, reserving space for axes and labels within a 960 by 500 viewport.

A program that loads in some data about CSS colors using D3 utilities, and uses React state to keep track of the data.

The Margin Convention

A bar chart displays the populations of the ten most populous countries, loaded from UN Population 2019 data. Using React and D3, the `scaleBand` maps countries on the vertical axis and `scaleLinear` maps population values to bar widths. SVG rectangles are rendered inside a transformed group, with the data fetched via D3’s `csv` utility. The visualization adheres to a fixed margin convention to clearly present the comparative scale.

The Margin Convention

A bar chart displays the ten most populous countries in 2020 using UN population data loaded via `d3.csv`. React renders an SVG with `rect` elements sized by `d3.scaleLinear` and positioned with `d3.scaleBand`. The chart uses the margin convention to offset the visualization within the SVG. The page also imports a utility function that summarizes dataset size, though it is not currently displayed.

The Margin Convention

This example shows a horizontal bar chart of the ten most populous countries, using UN population data for 2020. The chart applies a standard margin convention using D3’s `scaleBand` for the categorical country names and `scaleLinear` for population counts, rendered as SVG rectangles inside a translated group. The visualization is built with React, which manages the loading state via `useState` and `useEffect`, while D3’s `csv` utility fetches and parses the data before it is sliced and mapped to bars.

The Margin Convention

This example shows a horizontal bar chart of the ten most populous countries in 2020, with each bar’s length proportional to population. The visualization uses React to render SVG rectangles inside a `<g>` element translated by a margin object, while D3’s `csv` loads and parses the UN population data. `scaleBand` maps country names to vertical positions, and `scaleLinear` scales population values to bar widths within the inner chart dimensions. The chart omits axes and labels, focusing purely on the margin convention.

The Margin Convention - Bar Charts

This example demonstrates the margin convention for bar charts by rendering the top 10 most populous countries in 2020 using React and D3. It loads CSV data from the UN Population dataset via `d3.csv`, then uses `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear` to map countries and population values to SVG rectangles within a translated group element. The visualization appears as a horizontal bar chart with axes implied by the scales, while the margin object defines the inner plotting area. React hooks manage asynchronous data loading and state updates.

Margin Convention Bar Chart

A margin convention bar chart displays the top ten countries by 2020 population, with horizontal bars ordered by country name. The visualization uses React to manage state and render SVG elements, while D3 v5 utilities handle data loading and scales: `csv` fetches the UN population dataset, and `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear` map country names and population values to pixel positions. Axis ticks are generated via `xScale.ticks()`, with the chart area offset by explicit margins for the left-aligned labels.

The margin convention

A bar chart displays the ten most populous countries in 2020, using data from the UN Population 2019 dataset. The visualization demonstrates the margin convention by placing scales and axes inside a translated SVG group, separating the plot area from the chart edges. React manages the component state and renders the SVG, while D3’s `csv`, `scaleBand`, `scaleLinear`, and `max` functions handle data loading, scaling, and axis generation. Tick marks and labels for both axes are generated from the scale domains, with bars sized by population values.

The Margin Convention

A horizontal bar chart displays the top ten countries by 2020 population, parsed from a CSV of UN population data. React state loads the data via `d3.csv`, while `d3.scaleLinear` and `d3.scaleBand` map population values and country names to SVG rectangles within a standard margin layout.
