Forked from FruitBowl Example

The example shows two legends for mapping data to visual encodings: one for color using ordinal categories and one for size using a square-root scale. It renders SVG elements via D3 v5, with the color legend displaying discrete fruit names mapped to distinct hues, while the size legend displays a reversed set of numeric ticks with proportional circle radii. Reusable functions `colorLengend` and `sizeLengend` manage enter, update, and exit selections for the legends.

colour and size legends

This example demonstrates two separate SVG legends: a color legend using an ordinal scale mapping fruit names to distinct colors, and a size legend using a square-root scale with circular marks whose radii encode numeric values. The color legend renders colored circles for each category, while the size legend displays five ticks with proportional circle sizes and labels offset by the scaled radius. Both legends use reusable functions (`colorLegend` and `sizeLegend`) built with D3 v5, leveraging `selectAll`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` for data joins, with SVG elements styled via CSS.

Color and Size Legends

Two legends demonstrate independent D3 color and size scales. A color legend maps ordinal domains like “apple” and “lemon” to discrete hues, while a size legend uses a square-root scale with tick marks and semi-transparent circles. Both are rendered as SVG groups via custom reusable functions, `colorLegend` and `sizeLegend`, which bind data to enter/merge/exit selections. The code uses D3 v5 APIs such as `scaleOrdinal`, `scaleSqrt`, and `scaleDiverging` (imported but unused), with text styling applied through CSS classes.

Color and size legends

This example demonstrates two types of legend encodings for data visualization: a color legend mapping ordinal categories to hues, and a size legend scaling circles according to a square-root scale. The color legend displays fruit names with distinct colors, while the size legend shows numeric ticks with proportional circle radii. Built with D3 v5, the visualization uses `selectAll` and `.enter().append()` to construct SVG groups, circles, and text elements. Custom `colorLegend` and `sizeLegend` functions control the layout, with positioning handled via `attr('transform', ...)` and scales defined by `scaleOrdinal` and `scaleSqrt`.

Color and size legends

This example demonstrates two legends for mapping data to visual encodings. A color legend uses a d3.scaleOrdinal scale to map categorical fruit names to distinct colors, while a size legend uses a d3.scaleSqrt scale to map a numeric range to circle radii. The legends are custom reusable components, created with d3.selection and appended to an SVG canvas, with each tick rendered as a group containing a circle and a text label.

Color and size legends

This example demonstrates two custom legend components for mapping data values to visual encodings: a color legend for ordinal categories and a size legend for quantitative values. The color legend displays colored circles for fruits, while the size legend uses scaled circle radii to represent numeric values. Built with D3 v5, the code defines reusable functions `colorLegend` and `sizeLegend` that use `scaleOrdinal`, `scaleSqrt`, and selection joins to render SVG elements dynamically.

Color and Size Legends

This example demonstrates two common legend types for D3 visualizations: an ordinal color legend for categories and a square-root size legend for quantitative values. The color legend maps fruit names to distinct colors, while the size legend encodes numeric values using proportional circle radii. Both legends are rendered as SVG groups using reusable functions that leverage D3's `scaleOrdinal`, `scaleSqrt`, and `selection.join` pattern for enter/update/exit handling.

Color and Size Legends

This example demonstrates how D3 legends can encode data through color and size. Two separate legends are rendered with SVG: a color legend uses an ordinal scale to map fruit categories to distinct hues, while a size legend uses a square-root scale to represent numeric values with scaled circle radii. The code builds reusable legend components using D3’s data join pattern, applying scales like `scaleOrdinal` and `scaleSqrt`, with manual spacing and text offsets for tick labels.
