Worldwide Incidence of COVID-19

FeedBack

  • Feedback from peer
  • The basemap of World is centered and is a reasonable size. The thickness of country wise boundary is good. The size of the symbols is a little big and they overlap too much. I would suggest to use a bubble to show the intensity of incidents per country.
  • Details given about the coronavirus cases are helpful to understand . But the cases given are only per country rather than per location.
  • Only one color is used to show the coronavirus cases.
  • There's a good amount of data on the map but compared to the size of the svg, I wouldn't say that the data density is very high. The water of the map takes up half of the space.

  • Maybe make map size smaller since the interactivity is main part that will showing my topic

Encoding

I chose to use a map, which is the obvious way to show people how bad it is right now. Many maps of the pandemic have been made, but I want to incorporate the best features from each and add some of my own to tell the most accurate story possible.

Specifically, my map will:

  • Be choropleth map, it displays each country's confirmed cases and deaths shaded on a log scale
  • The color will change based on rates per capita
  • Encode two dimensions in color:
    • Intensity = total cases (or deaths) so far
    • Hue = percentage daily growth
  • If possible, resize the countries so that their area is proportional to population. Combined with the above features, this will allow the true scale to be shown while keeping having each country easy to identify by its shape.

Together with the map, there will be a semi-log graph of daily cases vs time, and a log-log plot of daily cases vs total cases which is useful for seeing when a country has exited the exponential growth phase. As with the map, the values on these graphs will be per capita. The next section will detail how they all interact with one another.

Interactivity

When a user hovers over a country or the plot for that country:

  • Shows the total number of cases, deaths and country's name in a tooltip
  • Highlights the country on the map by drawing a boundry around its shape
  • Highlights the plot for that country in the graphs below.(think of it)

When a user clicks on a point in the time-based graph:

  • The map is set to reflect the situation on that particular day
  • All data points in both graphs that are after this time point are faded
Finally, have a global toggle to switch between number of cases and number of deaths.
