This example displays the top 10 most populous countries as a horizontal bar chart without axes, using a fixed margin convention to inset the plot area. The chart loads data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 CSV, processes it with `d3.csv`, and renders SVG rectangles scaled by population. The code uses React hooks (`useState`, `useEffect`) to fetch and filter the data, then applies `d3.scaleBand` for the y-axis categories and `d3.scaleLinear` for the x-axis range, all within an SVG canvas of 960×500 pixels.

Margin Convention

This example shows the top 10 most populous countries as a horizontal bar chart with gridlines but no axes or labels. React manages the interface, while D3 v5's `csv`, `scaleBand`, and `scaleLinear` handle data loading and scaling. The chart renders as SVG, with country names on the y-axis and population values on the x-axis, using margins to position the inner plot area. Data comes from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 dataset.

The Margin Convention

This example shows the top 10 most populous countries as a simple bar chart, with each country’s population represented by the width of a rectangle. The chart deliberately omits axes, ticks, and labels to highlight the importance of margins in visualization layout. Built with React and D3 v5, it uses `scaleBand`, `scaleLinear`, and `max` to map data to screen coordinates, while a fixed margin object reserves space around the SVG. Data comes from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019, rendered entirely as SVG elements.

The Margin Convention

This example displays a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries in 2020, drawing from UN population data loaded via D3’s `csv` utility. React renders an SVG with scaled rectangles, using `scaleBand` for country categories and `scaleLinear` for population values, all positioned within a fixed margin using the `transform` attribute. The code relies on D3 v5 and React’s `useEffect` and `useState` hooks, with the chart’s dimensions computed from explicit top, right, bottom, and left margins to define the inner plotting area.

The Margin Convention

This example uses React and D3 v5 to render a bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 dataset. The chart deliberately omits axes and scales, displaying only bars whose lengths encode population values, while the margin constraints define the plotting area. Using `d3.csv` to load data, `d3.scaleBand` for the categorical y-axis, and `d3.scaleLinear` for the numeric x-axis, the SVG output calculates bar widths against a fixed inner width. The code also renders tick lines and labels for the x-axis, but no axis lines or y-axis tick marks, highlighting the conventional margin structure without full annotation.

Margin Convention

This example shows a simple horizontal bar chart of the ten most populous countries, using data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 dataset. The chart displays population values for 2020 as bars, with country names on the y-axis and a linear population scale on the x-axis. The visualization uses React to render SVG elements, while D3’s `csv`, `scaleBand`, `scaleLinear`, and `max` functions handle data parsing, scaling, and domain calculations. A fixed margin of 20 pixels on all sides positions the chart within a 960-by-500 pixel SVG canvas.

Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the Margin Convention in D3 by displaying a bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries using data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019. The chart initially appears as a bare visualization with no axes or labels, emphasizing the layout structure. The React component uses `useState` and `useEffect` to load CSV data via `d3.csv`, while `d3.scaleBand` and `d3.scaleLinear` position and size the rectangles within a specified margin. The SVG output is rendered with React, applying a translation transform to offset the inner chart area from the outer margins.

The Margin Convention

This visualization displays a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries for 2020, using data from the UN Population 2019 dataset loaded via D3’s `csv` utility. It leverages React’s `useState` and `useEffect` hooks to manage asynchronous data fetching and rendering. The chart maps country names to the y-axis using `d3.scaleBand` and population values to the x-axis with `d3.scaleLinear`, drawing SVG `<rect>` elements within a translated group that applies a 20-pixel margin on all sides.

The Margin Convention

This example presents the top 10 most populous countries as a bar chart, deliberately omitting axes and labels to highlight the importance of margins in visualization layout. Built with React and D3 v5, it uses `scaleBand` for the y-axis positioning and `scaleLinear` for bar widths, with data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019. The SVG rendering applies a 20-pixel margin on all sides via a translated `<g>` element, demonstrating how padding frames the chart area. The visualization intentionally looks incomplete to emphasize that proper margins are a foundational convention for readable charts.
