Six circles representing apples enter an SVG bowl with a grow-in animation, then a shared transition pattern animates their positions and radii. The example demonstrates D3’s general update pattern with `selection.data`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` selections. Using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, fruit type changes from apple to lemon trigger a color shift, while removal shrinks circles to zero before `remove()`. Timed `setTimeout` calls drive the enter, update, and exit phases.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five circles representing fruit enter an SVG with zero radius and grow into apples. The example demonstrates D3’s general update pattern, animating exits by shrinking circles to zero and modifying existing fruits via the data join. Using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, it transitions enter, update, and exit selections over one second. Hovering highlights a circle with a black stroke via mouse events. Over three seconds, `setTimeout` removes a fruit, changes a type to lemon, and filters another element, showing joins and transitions.

Bowl of Fruit- General Update Pattern with animation

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3’s general update pattern as apples and lemons enter, update, and exit with animated transitions. The SVG circles change position, radius, and fill color over time using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and size, while a key function tracks each fruit by unique ID. The code applies `transition().duration(1000)` to animate entering and exiting circles, merging enter and update selections with `merge()`, and removing exit selections after shrinking their radius to zero.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern for enter, update, and exit selections. Apples and lemons enter as circles that scale up from radius zero, update their fill color and size through a one-second transition, and exit by shrinking away. The code uses `selection.data`, `selection.enter`, `selection.merge`, and `selection.exit` with `transition.attr` to animate SVG circles, while `scaleOrdinal` maps fruit types to colors and radii. Data changes are triggered by `setTimeout` calls that remove, replace, or filter items from the fruits array.

Bowl of fruit General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with animated enter, update, and exit transitions for circles. Apples and lemons render as colored SVG circles using ordinal color and radius scales, with positions determined by index. The code uses `selection.data`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` methods alongside `transition().duration()` to smoothly resize and reposition elements as fruits are removed and types changed over timed intervals.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five fruits—apples and a lemon—sit in a row, animating in and out of a bowl. The example demonstrates the general update pattern: entering circles scale up from radius zero, exiting circles shrink to zero, and the one changed apple transitions into a lemon with a new color and radius. Built with d3.v6 and the `select`, `scaleOrdinal`, and `.transition().duration()` API, the SVG circles are driven by a `fruitBowl` function that handles enter, merge, and exit states.

Bowl of Fruit - General update pattern

Five circles representing apples transition in and out of an SVG bowl over timed intervals, demonstrating D3's general update pattern. The visualization shows how data joins handle entering, updating, and exiting elements: apples disappear, one apple is replaced by a lemon, and another is removed. The code uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius scales, `selection.enter()`, `selection.merge()`, `selection.exit()`, and `transition().duration()` to animate circle attributes like `r` and `cx`.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five fruit circles enter an SVG bowl as apples. The example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, using `selection.enter`, `merge`, and `exit` to handle changes. A `setTimeout` sequence removes an apple, mutates one apple into a lemon, and filters out another, with `d3.scaleOrdinal` mapping fruit types to colors and radii.

Bowl of Fruit - General update pattern

Five apples enter an SVG bowl. D3's general update pattern joins circles to `fruits` data, using `selectAll`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit`. Initial circles have zero radius, then a 1000ms `transition` animates them to their target positions and sizes. A timed script pops apples, swaps one for a lemon (changing its color via `scaleOrdinal` and radius), and filters out another, demonstrating enter, update, and exit transitions.
