A bowl holds a group of apples that change over time through a general update pattern. Fruits are added, removed, and transformed, with an apple turning into a lemon. Each fruit is a circle with a label, colored by type. The visualization uses d3.select, data binding with keys, and transitions with duration to animate circle radii shrinking and growing. The bowl is drawn as a rectangle with rounded corners.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern - Grouped

A bowl of fruit visualizes the General Update Pattern with grouped elements; apples and lemons appear as colored circles within a bowl, with each fruit's type distinguished by a specific color and radius. The D3.js code uses an ordinal scale for color and radius, and coordinated enter, update, and exit transitions to animate the circle sizes over two seconds as fruits are added, removed, or changed. The example is rendered as SVG and demonstrates the pattern with a click-to-update interaction on numeric labels.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern with Bowl

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing a bowl of fruit that changes over time as apples are eaten and replaced with lemons. The visualization renders circles and labels inside an SVG, using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping based on fruit type. Data updates are handled through enter, merge, and exit selections, with circles and text appended to groups. The bowl itself is a static rounded rectangle, while the fruit transitions are driven by timed state changes.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, animating changes to a dataset of circles as apples are eaten or replaced with lemons. The visualization shows how entering, updating, and exiting elements are handled distinctly, with new fruits scaling up from radius zero and removed fruits shrinking away. Using d3.selectAll and data joins, the code applies ordinal scales for color and radius, then transitions positions and sizes over one-second durations. Fruit identities persist through the data key function, ensuring stable updates as the array mutates over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples sit in a bowl rendered as a rounded rectangle. Using the General Update Pattern, the visualization animates data-driven changes with D3's enter, update, and exit selections. `d3.scaleOrdinal` maps fruit types to colors and radii, while `selection.merge` handles state transitions. Over timed intervals, apples are removed and one is replaced with a lemon, which updates the SVG circles and text labels accordingly. The bowl's shape is a fixed SVG `rect` with large corner radii, and all rendering uses D3 v6 with SVG elements.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This visualization demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing a bowl of fruit that changes over time as items are added, removed, and modified. Initially five apples appear, then one is eaten, an apple is replaced by a lemon, and another apple is removed. The example uses D3's `select`, `scaleOrdinal`, and transition system with `transition().duration()` to animate circle radii and colors, rendering in SVG. The code in `fruitBowl.js` shows enter, merge, and exit transitions, with each fruit assigned an `id` for key-based data joining.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern, showing apples and lemons as circles that are added, removed, or converted to different types. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, while data joins with key functions handle enter, update, and exit selections. SVG circles and text labels animate their radius changes via transition().duration(1000). The code uses d3.range to generate initial data and setTimeout to trigger state changes over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the general update pattern. Five circles represent apples visually, and over time the data changes: fruits are removed, a type changes from apple to lemon, and another fruit is deleted. The visualization shows how the D3.js update pattern handles these enter, update, and exit states through a `fruitBowl` function. Using `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, circles transition their size, position, and fill over one second. The animation uses `.transition().duration(1000)` to smoothly animate these changes, while the exit transition shrinks circles to a radius of zero before removal.

Bowl of Fruit - General update pattern single element

Five apples sit in a bowl rendered as an SVG rectangle, with each fruit as a group containing a colored circle and label. D3's general update pattern removes, modifies, and re-adds elements over timed intervals: an apple disappears, a middle apple changes to a lemon, and another is filtered out. The code uses d3-selection’s `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` methods with ordinal scales for color and radius.
