Fork of Fork of L3 JS Sol Lewitt Reproduction Horizontal

Created on Jan 8, 2023

A generative art piece draws two sets of overlapping horizontal and vertical stripes through an SVG canvas, with the stripes visible only within circular masks that sit at the center of the viewport. One mask reveals a circle of dark-on-light stripes, while the second mask inverts the effect, creating a contrasting interplay of line orientation and color. The piece uses D3 v7’s `select`, `range`, and data joins to create 100 rectangles in each direction, applying SVG `<mask>` elements to control visibility.

Fork of L3 JS Sol Lewitt Reproduction. Horizontal

This example presents a generative, geometric composition inspired by Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings. It shows a grid of thin horizontal and vertical bars, with a circular region in the center where the bars are inverted in contrast: horizontal bars become visible inside the circle, while vertical bars are masked out there. The code constructs an SVG scene using the Document API (`createElementNS`), creating 100 horizontal and 100 vertical rectangles. Two SVG masks (`circle-mask` and `circle-mask-2`) define the circular interplay, with the first mask using a white circle on black to reveal the horizontal bars, and the second using a black circle on white to hide the vertical bars.

Fork of Fork of Full Sol LeWitt Reproduction with D3

This visualization recreates a Sol LeWitt wall drawing using an SVG canvas. It layers two sets of perpendicular, striped rectangles, each masked to reveal the artwork through repeating geometric symbols. The code uses D3 v7 methods like `select`, `range`, `join`, and `symbol` to generate the marks. Two SVG masks are applied with inverted fills, producing a crosshatched pattern where the symbols appear as cutouts.

Fork of Fork of Full of Sol LeWitt Reproduction with D3

This example reproduces a Sol LeWitt-inspired geometric composition using D3 v7, rendering two sets of overlapping horizontal and vertical stripes on an SVG canvas. The stripes are filtered through mask elements that reveal different symbol glyphs—circles, crosses, and other d3.symbol shapes—positioned along the center. The code uses d3.select, d3.range, and d3.symbol to generate the paths, with masks applied via SVG attributes. The artwork alternates mask inversion to create contrasting positive and negative space across the full window dimensions.

Fork of Fork of Sol Lewitt Reproduction vertical

This example creates a dynamic, full-screen SVG composition of overlapping striped patterns. It uses JavaScript to generate 100 horizontal and 100 vertical rectangles, each with a fixed thickness, and applies an SVG mask to each set. A circular mask restricts the horizontal stripes to a central circle, while an inverted mask applies the same circular cutout to the vertical stripes. The result is a grid of lines that are visible only within the intersecting circular region, demonstrating the use of the SVG `<mask>` element and dynamic DOM manipulation with `createElementNS`.

Fork of Sol LeWitt Reproduction with D3

A fork of a Sol LeWitt reproduction, this piece generates a field of 100 horizontal and 100 vertical rectangles in D3 v3. The code uses `d3.select`, `d3.range`, and SVG `mask` elements to layer the stripes. Two circular masks, one with a black background and white circle, the other with inverted colors, clip the grids to reveal intersecting patterns. The result is a dynamic geometric composition rendered at full screen size.

Fork of Fork of Sol Lewitt Reproduction Vertical 3

This visualization generates a grid of horizontal and vertical rectangles on an SVG canvas. A circular mask, created with SVG mask elements, reveals a portion of the horizontal stripes while the vertical bars remain fully visible. The piece uses the Document Object Model (DOM) API to create and append SVG elements, with dimensions based on the browser window size. The composition is a generative reproduction inspired by Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings.

Fork of Fork of Sol LeWitt Reproduction with D3

This example reproduces Sol LeWitt’s geometric wall drawing using overlapping horizontal and vertical stripes that intersect within two circular masks. It renders 100 thin rectangles per direction across the full viewport, with the first mask revealing the horizontal set as a white circle on black, and the second mask revealing the vertical set as a black circle on white. Built with D3 v6, the code uses `select`, `range`, and `join` to generate SVG `<rect>` elements, while mask definitions control visibility. The result shows two concentric circular zones of striped patterns against a plain background.

Fork of Fork of Martin's Fork of Sol LeWitt Reproduction

This piece generates a geometric abstraction inspired by Sol LeWitt, displaying a full-window SVG canvas filled with horizontal and vertical stripes. The stripes are masked by two overlapping SVG polygon masks—one triangle exposes horizontal bands, while a second, inverted triangle reveals vertical bands against a white backdrop. The work nests multiple masks and rectangles, creating a dynamic interplay of intersecting line grids. Built with JavaScript’s `document.createElementNS` for SVG elements, it computes layout dynamically from `window.innerWidth` and `window.innerHeight`, drawing 150 horizontal and 150 vertical rectangles to form the final composition.
