This is a general update pattern example built with D3 v5 and the React framework, rendered as SVG. It shows a row of five apples that are drawn as circles, with a single fruit (the middle one) changing from an apple to a lemon after a one-second delay. The code uses D3's `select`, `scaleOrdinal`, and `range` APIs to map fruit types to colors and radii, and it demonstrates the enter, merge, and exit lifecycle for updating SVG circle elements.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3.js general update pattern for adding, removing, and modifying SVG circles. A row of apples animates in, then one is removed, another changes into a lemon with a color and radius shift, and finally a different apple is deleted. The code uses D3 v5's `select`, `range`, and `scaleOrdinal` for styling, along with the data join methods `enter`, `merge`, `exit`, and `transition` to animate changes over one-second durations. React-style function calls manage the state updates.

Bowl of fruit, general update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3.js, showing a bowl of fruit as circles that change over time. Initially five apples appear, then one is removed, another changes to a lemon, and a second apple is eaten. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, with enter, merge, and exit selections to handle dynamic data updates. Rendered as SVG in a React framework with d3.v5, the code also includes a static bowl shape drawn as a rounded rectangle.

Bowl of Fruit General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the General Update Pattern in D3, showing how SVG elements are entered, updated, and exited as a dataset of fruit changes over time. The visualization initially renders five apples, then removes one, changes an apple to a lemon, and filters out another item through scripted setTimeout calls. The code uses `d3.select`, `d3.range`, `d3.scaleOrdinal`, and custom `fruitBowl` logic to manage groups, circles, and text labels, with color and radius scales mapping fruit types to visual properties.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern using a static bowl of fruit rendered as SVG circles. Five apples appear in a row, then one fruit is removed after one second, and a third apple transforms into a lemon after two seconds, illustrating enter, update, and exit selections. It uses d3.select, d3.range, d3.scaleOrdinal, and a custom fruitBowl function that merges entered and updated elements before applying radius and fill attributes from color and radius scales.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern1

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern by showing a row of five apples that transition over time: one apple is removed, and another apple changes into a lemon. It renders SVG circles using d3.selectAll and a data join, with scaleOrdinal for color and radius. The update, enter, and exit selections are handled explicitly, with exit().remove() deleting the removed circle. Data is managed in a plain JavaScript array, and a render function reapplies attributes, simulating a component-based approach with D3 v5.

Bowl of Fruit General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern by animating a bowl of fruit rendered as SVG shapes in a React app. It uses D3 v5’s `selectAll`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` methods to handle data changes: an apple disappears, another apple turns into a lemon, and a third is removed. The fruit is drawn with `circle` elements colored via `scaleOrdinal`, and the bowl is a static `rect` with rounded corners. Timed delays trigger the three state changes sequentially.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five fruit circles enter an SVG bowl as apples. The example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, using `selection.enter`, `merge`, and `exit` to handle changes. A `setTimeout` sequence removes an apple, mutates one apple into a lemon, and filters out another, with `d3.scaleOrdinal` mapping fruit types to colors and radii.

Bowl of fruit - General update pattern

Five circles represent apples in a row, rendered as SVG via React and D3 v5. The visualization demonstrates D3's general update pattern: new fruit enters, existing fruit updates its position and color, and removed fruit exits with a shrink animation. Timed JavaScript events modify the fruit array, triggering transitions that move circles horizontally, change an apple to a lemon, and delete items. The code uses D3's selection, merge, and exit methods with a one-second transition duration for all changes.
