This example demonstrates the "margin convention" in D3 by rendering the top 10 most populous countries as a simple bar chart, with visible spacing around the plot area. It uses React hooks to load and filter data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 via `d3.csv`, then maps it to SVG rectangles with `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear`. The chart omits axes, drawing only the bars inside a translated `<g>` element, highlighting the margins as a foundational layout principle.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3 by rendering a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries from a UN population dataset. The chart uses a React component with D3 scales (`scaleBand`, `scaleLinear`) to position and size SVG rectangles within a translated group element, explicitly reserving space via a margin object. The x-axis encodes population in 2020, while the y-axis displays country names. The code applies D3's `csv` loading and React's `useState` and `useEffect` hooks for data fetching.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3 by rendering a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries using 2020 UN population data loaded via `d3.csv`. The chart uses `d3.scaleBand` and `d3.scaleLinear` to map country names and population values to SVG `rect` elements within a translated `<g>` group, with explicit margins separating the inner plot area from the SVG edges. React state and the `useEffect` hook manage asynchronous data loading, while the entire visualization is rendered as SVG inside a React component.

The Margin Convention

This example shows a bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 dataset, with the bars rendered using React and SVG. It demonstrates the margin convention by defining a `margin` object and using it to offset an inner `<g>` group, allowing the chart to fit within a 960×500 viewport. The code uses `d3.scaleBand` for the y-axis, `d3.scaleLinear` for the x-axis, and `d3.csv` to load and parse the data. Notably, the chart lacks axes, making it intentionally primitive and focusing purely on the spatial layout.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3 by rendering a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 countries by 2020 population from UN data. The chart uses SVG rectangles positioned with `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear` scales, nested inside a translated `<g>` group to offset the visualization from the SVG edges. React hooks like `useState` and `useEffect` manage asynchronous data loading via `d3.csv`, while the margin object explicitly defines padding for the plot area.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the importance of chart margins by rendering the top 10 most populous countries as a pathetic bar chart with no axes. The bars are drawn directly against the SVG edges, making the lack of scales and labels immediately apparent. The code uses React hooks to load data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 via `d3.csv`, then maps that data with `d3.scaleBand` and `d3.scaleLinear` to position rectangles. A `<g>` transform applies the margin offsets, while `d3.max` computes the domain for the x-axis scale.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3 by rendering a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries from UN population data. React manages the component state, fetching the CSV via `d3.csv` and storing the parsed data. The chart uses `scaleBand` for the y-axis country categories and `scaleLinear` for the x-axis population values, with bars drawn as SVG `rect` elements inside a translated group to respect the margin. The visualization shows how margins create space for potential axes while keeping the plot area clean.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3 by rendering a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries from a UN population dataset (2020 estimates). The code uses D3’s `csv` loader, `scaleBand`, and `scaleLinear` to position and size the bars within an inner plotting area defined by explicit margins, while React’s `useState` and `useEffect` manage data fetching and component state. All SVG elements are generated declaratively through React, with the root group translated by the margin values to align the chart inside the fixed 960×500 viewport.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the fundamental D3 margin convention by rendering a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries from a UN population dataset. The visualization shows population values as proportional bars within an SVG, with the chart’s plotting area properly inset from the SVG edges using a margin object. Built with React and D3 v6, the code uses `d3.csv` for data loading, `scaleBand` for the categorical y-axis, and `scaleLinear` for the quantitative x-axis. A `<g>` element is translated by the margin offsets to position all rectangles correctly.
