This example demonstrates special cases of the General Update Pattern for animated data transitions. It shows a bowl of fruits—apples and lemons—as colored circles with labels, where fruits are added, removed, or swapped over time. The visualization uses D3 v5’s selection chaining, merging enter and existing elements, and applies sequential transitions to animate opacity, color, and text styles. The SVG rendering uses `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius scales, with `.transition()` to choreograph fading effects and element removal, highlighting how D3 handles updates, exits, and keyed elements.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern for animated transitions in D3.js. As the data changes over time, the visualization shows a row of fruit shapes that are added, removed, or altered—apples appear, one is eaten, another becomes a lemon, and an apple is removed from the middle. The code uses D3’s selection `.enter()`, `.merge()`, and `.exit()` methods to handle the incremental updates to SVG circles and text labels. It applies ordinal color and radius scales to style apples and lemons distinctly.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3 with special cases for entering, updating, and exiting elements. It shows a bowl of fruit where apples are added, removed, and replaced with lemons over time, with transitions animating position and opacity changes. The code uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, `selection.merge` for combining enter and update selections, and `transition.duration` for smooth animations. The visualization renders as SVG with circles and text labels inside a rounded rectangle bowl.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3.js, showing how data joins handle entering, updating, and exiting elements as fruits are added, removed, or modified. Animated transitions move apples and lemons across an SVG canvas, with circles and text labels updating their positions and colors. The code uses d3.select, data joins with key functions, and transition().duration() to animate changes. Fruit types are mapped to colors and radii via scaleOrdinal, with a static bowl rendered as a rectangle.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

This visualization demonstrates several special cases of the general update pattern for nested elements, using D3.js to animate a bowl of fruit over time. It shows five apples inside a bowl, where individual elements undergo transitions: an apple changes into a lemon, a group is removed, and another group is repositioned. The code employs D3’s `transition` API with `.duration()` and `.attr()` methods to animate circle radii, fill colors, group transforms, and text labels, interacting with SVG elements including circles, rectangles, and text.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

A bowl-of-fruit visualization demonstrates the general update pattern with special cases: apples appear, disappear, and one changes into a lemon. The example shows how to handle data joins where elements are removed by filtering an array, existing elements mutate, and new elements enter. Using d3 v5 with SVG and animated transitions, the code leverages scaleOrdinal for fruit color and radius, selection.merge for updating, and transition.attr to animate exit. The data is a simple array of fruit objects, rendered as circles with text labels in a static bowl shape.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern & Animated Transitions

This example demonstrates the general update pattern for smoothly transitioning data changes in an SVG visualization. A bowl of fruit, rendered as colored circles, adapts to eating apples and replacing one apple with a lemon through animated position and radius adjustments. The code uses D3 v5’s data joins with key functions, `transition().duration()` for animations, and `scaleOrdinal` for mapping fruit types to colors and sizes. Entering circles fade in from radius zero, while exiting circles shrink away.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

This example demonstrates a “bowl of fruit” animation that transitions through a sequence of data updates using the general update pattern. It shows how entering, updating, and exiting SVG elements behave in special cases, such as reordering, replacing, and removing data points. The visualization uses D3 v5 with a `scaleOrdinal` color scale and radius scale, while `selection.data()`, `selection.enter()`, and `selection.exit()` manage circles and labels. Each fruit type—apple, lemon, and pear—renders as a colored circle with a text label, updated at timed intervals via `setTimeout`.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

This example demonstrates the "general update pattern" in D3.js, showing how a data visualization animates changes to a dataset of apples and lemons over time. It displays a bowl of fruit, where each fruit is a circle with a type-specific color and radius, and items are added, removed, or modified as the simulation progresses. The code uses D3's selectors and transition methods, including `selection.selectAll`, `.merge()`, and `.transition().duration()`, to smoothly animate enter, update, and exit states. The visualization is rendered as SVG with animations triggered by `setTimeout` calls, which alter the fruit array and re-render the scene.
