Five circles represent apples in an SVG bowl, animated with the D3 general update pattern. Using D3 v5 selections with key functions and `transition.attr`, the visualization removes, modifies, and filters fruit over timed intervals, demonstrating enter, update, and exit states. Apples turn into lemons by changing fill color and radius via ordinal scales.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five circles represent apples in an SVG bowl, and a sequence of animated updates demonstrates D3's general update pattern. The visualization starts with five apples, then removes one, changes another into a lemon, and finally filters out a third fruit, using enter, merge, and exit selections. D3 v6 scales map fruit types to colors and radii, while transitions animate radius and position changes over one second. The `fruitBowl` module handles the data join with `selection.data`, `enter.append`, and `exit.remove` APIs.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five circles representing apples animate into a bowl-like arrangement using D3's general update pattern. The visualization demonstrates enter, update, and exit selections as apples are removed and one is replaced by a lemon, with color and radius scales mapping fruit type to visual properties. Using D3 v5, transitions animate the circles' position and radius over one second, while the exit selection shrinks removed circles to zero before deletion.

Bowl of Fruit - General update pattern - transitions

Five circles representing fruit in a bowl transition between states using D3.js's general update pattern. The SVG visualization begins with five apples, which are removed, replaced with a lemon, and filtered over time. The animation uses keyed data with `transition().duration(1000)` to animate radius changes while color is set via an ordinal color scale mapping apple and lemon types to distinct colors.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

Five circles represent apples in an SVG bowl, rendered with D3 v5’s data join and the General Update Pattern. The view animates through timed state changes: one apple is removed, a middle apple turns into a lemon, and another apple disappears. Using `selection.enter`, `merge`, and `exit`, the code updates circle radii and fills via `scaleOrdinal` color and size scales. Fruit data comes from a local array, while a CSV file is present but unused.

Bowl of Fruit - General update pattern

Five circles representing apples transition in and out of an SVG bowl over timed intervals, demonstrating D3's general update pattern. The visualization shows how data joins handle entering, updating, and exiting elements: apples disappear, one apple is replaced by a lemon, and another is removed. The code uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius scales, `selection.enter()`, `selection.merge()`, `selection.exit()`, and `transition().duration()` to animate circle attributes like `r` and `cx`.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five colored circles represent fruit in a bowl, demonstrating the general update pattern. Apples are red and large, lemons yellow and small. A timer sequentially removes, replaces, and filters fruits, animating circle radius and x-position over one second. The visualization uses d3 v5's `select`, `range`, `scaleOrdinal`, and custom `.transition()` methods to handle enter, update, and exit states with SVG animations.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update pattern

Five circles represent fruit in a bowl, with apples drawn in red and lemons in yellow. The visualization demonstrates the general update pattern for animated transitions: apples leave the bowl, an apple transforms into a lemon, and fruit is removed entirely. Using d3's selection.enter, merge, and exit methods with transition.duration, circles shrink to zero radius, change color, and slide to new positions over one-second intervals.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five circles are drawn as apples in a bowl, each at a fixed horizontal position. The visualization demonstrates the general update pattern: initially five apples appear, then the last is removed, the third apple changes into a lemon, and the second item is deleted. Using D3 v5’s `selectAll`, `data`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` methods within the custom `fruitBowl` function, the SVG circles transition smoothly. Ordinal color and radius scales map fruit types to specific colors and sizes, with data defined in `index.js`.
