This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern for dynamic data binding. A row of fruit-shaped circles transitions between states as apples are removed, replaced with lemons, or filtered out over timed intervals. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, while enter, merge, and exit selections handle animated circle updates. SVG transitions with duration 1000 animate circle positions and radii, with exit elements shrinking to zero before removal.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern using animated transitions to manage changes in a dataset of fruit items. It shows how enter, update, and exit selections behave as apples are removed and one apple transforms into a lemon. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping based on fruit type, and applies transition().duration() to animate circle radius and position changes. The update flow is driven by JavaScript setTimeout calls that modify the fruits array and trigger re-rendering of the SVG circles.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates D3’s general update pattern by animating a bowl of fruit as apples are removed or replaced with lemons. It shows the enter, update, and exit selections in action: new circles enter, existing circles transition their radius based on fruit type, and removed circles shrink to zero before being deleted. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, with d3.transition handling the 1-second animations. The visualization is driven by timed updates to a JavaScript array, which is re-rendered through the fruitBowl function.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern for animated transitions in D3.js. As the data changes over time, the visualization shows a row of fruit shapes that are added, removed, or altered—apples appear, one is eaten, another becomes a lemon, and an apple is removed from the middle. The code uses D3’s selection `.enter()`, `.merge()`, and `.exit()` methods to handle the incremental updates to SVG circles and text labels. It applies ordinal color and radius scales to style apples and lemons distinctly.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with animated transitions of fruit circles in an SVG bowl. A row of apples shrinks and disappears when removed, changes type to a lemon with a color and radius shift, and filters out middle elements. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, selection.merge, and transition().duration() to animate entering, updating, and exiting circles. Data is managed with random IDs, rendered in React-compatible D3 v5.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern, showing apples and lemons as circles that are added, removed, or converted to different types. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, while data joins with key functions handle enter, update, and exit selections. SVG circles and text labels animate their radius changes via transition().duration(1000). The code uses d3.range to generate initial data and setTimeout to trigger state changes over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3.js by animating a bowl of fruit. It shows how data joins handle entering, updating, and exiting elements as apples are eaten or replaced with lemons. Using d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, circles transition smoothly over one-second durations. The code uses d3.select, selection.data with a key function, .merge(), and transition.duration to manage state changes on an SVG canvas.

Bowl of fruit - Geenral Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern through a bowl of fruit visualization. It shows five colored circles representing apples and lemons, which appear via a staggered enter transition, shrink and disappear when eaten, and change color and size when one fruit transforms from an apple to a lemon. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, and applies chained transitions with d3.transition to smoothly animate circle updates. Data joins are handled through selection.data with a key function, merging enter and update selections, and removing exit selections after an animation.
