This example visualizes the number of medals won by each country at every Winter Olympic Games from 1924 to 2018. It displays the first record from a CSV dataset containing yearly medal counts per nation, highlighting the parsed values for year and medal types. The code imports the data using a CSV parser, converts the numeric fields from strings to numbers, and renders the first entry as formatted JSON in a pre element. The visualization uses plain JavaScript with the container's innerHTML property to present the data sample.

Winter Olympics

This visualization explores historical Winter Olympics medal data from a CSV sourced via Kaggle, parsing years into numeric values for analysis. It displays the first row of the dataset as a formatted JSON object using template literals in a pre element, with a large font size for readability. The code imports the data with a bundled CSV parser and exports both the parsed dataset and a main function that renders the output. It highlights the structure of each record, including athlete, country, event, and medal attributes, providing a foundation for investigating country dominance, athlete success, and event-specific strengths.

Map of Winter Olympic Medals 1924 - 2018

This map visualizes the number of Winter Olympic medals won by each country from 1924 to 2018. Each country is represented by a point on a world map, with the size of the point scaled to the total medals won that year. A year slider allows users to scrub through time, updating the map to show medal counts for each Olympics. The data is sourced from a Kaggle dataset, and the visualization highlights historical medal distributions, making it easy to spot dominant nations and shifts in athletic performance across decades. The map uses a sequential color scale to indicate medal totals, with tooltips providing exact counts and country names. This example demonstrates an effective use of a geographic choropleth with dynamic temporal filtering to explore trends in international sports achievement.

Winter Olympics Participants

This interactive scatter plot shows the number of countries participating in the Winter Olympics each year from 1924 to 2018. Each circle represents a medal-winning country at a specific Games, with its vertical position reflecting the total participant count for that year. The visualization uses D3.js scale functions and axis components to render the chart, while the data aggregation logic, which counts unique countries per year via JavaScript Set objects, is embedded in the main module. The dataset originates from Kaggle, and the code relies on the `@curran/axis-labels` library for axis annotation.

Winter Olympic Medals

This choropleth map visualizes the total number of Winter Olympic medals won by each country from 1924 to 2018, with color intensity representing medal counts. The map uses a natural Earth projection and colors countries on a red sequential scale, ranging from light (low medal counts) to dark red (highest counts). Hovering over a country displays a tooltip with its total medals and a breakdown of gold, silver, and bronze counts. The visualization also includes a graticule, an outline, and a legend with an axis to map colors to medal totals. Countries without medal data are shown in light gray, and data processing handles historical country name changes (e.g., Soviet Union to Russia, Great Britain to United Kingdom) to ensure accurate representation. The map is interactive, with tooltips providing detailed medal information for each country.

data for line graph

This line chart shows the number of medals each country won at the Winter Olympics from 1924 through 2016, with the x-axis representing time (year) and the y-axis showing the total medal count. Each country is drawn as a separate colored line, allowing viewers to compare medal trajectories across nations. The dataset comes from Kaggle’s “Winter Olympic Medals 1924–2018” (source: v3, author: akankshapawar1, MIT license). The chart reveals dominance patterns, such as Norway’s sustained high medal counts and the rise and fall of countries like the Soviet Union and Germany over time.

Winter olympics bar chart

This bar chart shows the top 10 countries by total medals (gold, silver, and bronze) across all Winter Olympics from 1924 to 2018. The data is aggregated from the `@akankshapawar1/olympics` dataset. It uses d3's `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear` to position bars, with axis labels from `@curran/axis-labels`. The visualization renders green bars on a white inner rectangle, highlighting the leading nations' medal counts.

Winter Olympics Participants - Iterate

This visualization displays the number of participant countries in each Winter Olympics from 1924 to 2018, with each circle representing a year. The code computes participant counts by aggregating unique country names per year using a JavaScript `Set` within a `reduce` operation. It uses D3.js scales and axes to map years and counts, and renders circles with a fixed radius and reduced opacity to show the trend. Data comes from a Kaggle dataset of Winter Olympic medals.
