This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern for animated transitions in an SVG scene. It renders a bowl of fruit where apples and lemons appear, change type, and disappear at timed intervals. The visualization uses React, D3 v5's `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping, and the `select` API to manage enter, update, and exit states for circles and text labels.

A bowl of fruit animates through a sequence of state changes using the general update pattern. Five apples initially render, then one is removed, a lemon replaces an apple, and another apple is filtered out, with each transition updating the SVG circles over one second. The code uses D3 v5’s `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping, `selection.data` with key functions, and chained `transition().duration()` calls to animate enter, update, and exit selections within a React framework.

A fruit bowl animation demonstrates data-binding and transitions with D3 v5 in a React framework. Circles represent apples and lemons, colored via `scaleOrdinal` with red and yellow ranges. The `fruitBowl` function uses `selection.data`, `enter.merge`, and `exit` to update SVG circles, animating radius and x-position with `.transition().duration(1000)`. Timeouts trigger removal and type changes, showing enter, update, and exit patterns.

This example demonstrates a dynamic fruit bowl visualization where apples and lemons are rendered as colored circles with labels, and the dataset changes over time through simulated eating and replacement actions. The visualization uses D3 v5 and React, with SVG rendering for the bowl shape and fruit elements. The code leverages D3’s `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, and employs data joins with `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` selections to update the scene. Timed `setTimeout` calls trigger modifications to the fruits array, showcasing incremental updates.

This example demonstrates a simple data-join visualization of fruit shapes, showing apples and lemons as colored circles with labels. It uses D3 v5’s `scaleOrdinal` to map fruit types to colors (red for apples, yellow for lemons) and radii (50 vs. 20 pixels). The code employs the general update pattern with `selection.selectAll`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` to handle adding, removing, and updating fruits over time via `setTimeout`. The visualization renders inside an SVG container within a React scaffold, with a rounded rectangle representing a bowl.

D3 Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates D3’s general update pattern by animating a bowl of fruit represented as SVG circles. Apples and lemons enter, update, and exit with smooth radius transitions over one second. The code uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, `selection.data()`, `enter().append()`, `merge()`, and `exit().remove()` inside a React-compatible `fruitBowl` function. Data changes are triggered by `setTimeout` calls that pop, replace, or filter items from an array, showcasing how D3 binds and reconciles data with animated visual updates.

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3.js general update pattern with animated transitions. Circles represent apples and lemons, color-coded via a d3.scaleOrdinal and sized with another ordinal scale. The example renders to SVG and uses d3.transition to animate entering, updating, and exiting elements over one-second intervals. State changes—removing fruit, changing an apple to a lemon, and filtering the array—trigger the React-wrapped fruitBowl function to update the visualization dynamically.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with animated transitions of fruit circles in an SVG bowl. A row of apples shrinks and disappears when removed, changes type to a lemon with a color and radius shift, and filters out middle elements. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, selection.merge, and transition().duration() to animate entering, updating, and exiting circles. Data is managed with random IDs, rendered in React-compatible D3 v5.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3.js general update pattern with an animated bowl of fruit, showing apples and lemons as circles with color-coded fills. The code uses `selection.data()`, `selection.enter()`, and `selection.exit()` to manage joining data to SVG elements, with `transition().duration(500)` animating circle radii and text positions on updates. A `scaleOrdinal` maps fruit types to colors and sizes, while timed `setTimeout` calls trigger sequential data mutations—removing items, changing types, and adding fruits—to illustrate enter, update, and exit transitions. The rendering relies on D3 v5 within a React framework, using SVG and explicit animation transitions.
