Five blue squares animate their width and height from zero to the values in the rectData array (100, 200, 300, 400, 500), growing at a 0.3 opacity on a 960-by-500 SVG canvas. Using D3 v5 and the select API, the visualization attaches a transition to the enter selection of each rectangle, applying a 5-second duration with a 250-millisecond delay to both dimension changes simultaneously.

Create an animated rectangle with D3

This example demonstrates how D3 transitions can animate the properties of an SVG rectangle. An initially short, 100-pixel-wide rectangle grows in height from zero to 400 pixels over two seconds after a one-second delay, while its fill color changes from steelblue to a warm orange in a second transition. The code uses D3 v5’s `d3.select` to append an SVG element, `selection.append('rect')` to create the shape, and chained `transition()` calls with `.delay()` and `.duration()` methods. The rectangle is rendered directly in the browser via SVG, with all styling and timing defined imperatively in JavaScript.

transitions

This example animates a set of circles as they move and resize across a wide SVG canvas. Five circles, each driven by values from a static JavaScript array, shift their horizontal, vertical, and radius properties over a four-second duration. The code uses D3's `select()` to append the SVG and builds the animation with the `transition()` API, chaining `.duration()`, `.attr()`, and opacity settings. The circles are rendered as semi-transparent blue shapes, with the initial data divided by a constant factor within the external data module.

Test1

This example animates twenty pairs of rectangles moving diagonally across an SVG canvas, with each rectangle shifting horizontally and vertically before transitioning to a red fill. The visualization demonstrates chained D3 transitions, where the initial position attributes are set without animation, then followed by two sequential transition stages. The data is generated programmatically in JavaScript using a loop to create an array of x-coordinates. The code uses D3 v5’s selection, data binding, and `.transition().duration()` API, rendering elements as SVG rectangles within a 900×500 viewport.

D3 Transitions

Six colored circles of varying sizes move across a light green canvas, growing from and shrinking to a radius of zero at different speeds. The visualization demonstrates the D3 transition API, using a slow two-second transition to animate the circles' entry and exit by scaling their radius, while a fast 500-millisecond linear ease animates position updates. The sketch initializes six data points with id, x, y, r, and fill attributes, then uses D3's `select`, `transition`, and `easeLinear` functions to orchestrate the dynamic reshaping of the circle group. Simple transition chaining in v5

A blue circle moves across an SVG canvas in three sequential transitions, each lasting four seconds. First, its horizontal position animates from the left side to the right side; then its radius grows from 20 to 40 pixels; finally, its fill color changes from blue to red. This example demonstrates transition chaining in D3 v5, where calling `.transition()` after a previous transition schedules the next animation to begin automatically. It uses D3’s `transition` API with `.duration()` and `.attr()`/`.style()` methods.

data-space-transition

Four animated transitions show how the same dataset—eight demographic groups with percentages—can be represented as rectangles and lines along a shared axis. A sliding vertical midpoint shifts between two values, with each transition morphing the visual encoding between bar lengths, path strokes, and interpolated rect tweens using d3 transitions. The SVG and canvas renderings cycle through these states on click, preserving color coding and axis labels. The code relies on d3 selections, transitions, and interpolators to animate the geometric transformations.

Simple transition in v7

A blue circle transitions horizontally across a wide SVG canvas in this minimal demonstration of d3-transition. The circle moves from the left edge to the right over four seconds, using a chained `transition()` with a `duration(4000)` call after initial attributes are set. The example uses d3.v7 to select the body, append an SVG element, and define the circle’s fill, radius, and starting coordinates before applying the animation. No data source is involved; the code directly specifies all visual properties and the animation target position.

TD1

Three circles—green, blue, and red—sit in a row on a gray SVG canvas. Clicking a rectangle starts a two-second animated transition that moves the red circle diagonally downward, followed by a second transition returning it horizontally. The red circle also turns black on mouseover, while the green circle responds to hover via a CSS class. Built with D3 v5, the example demonstrates selections, event handlers, and chained `transition.attr` calls, with no external data source.
